Sweden
Sweden – a paradise for anglers
Sweden is famous for both of her beautiful nature and the rich waters. Adventure Fishing is providing the best destinations, where you can find lakes in different size, rivers, and nerertheless, the famous sea archipelago with its small rocky islands. Sweden has been less known in the Central European market, our team is trying to give you comprehensive information about these excellent fishing destinations.
The Swedish archipelago is one of the best pike fishing destinations in the world. The Baltic Sea has a low salt content and plenty of small fish alongside the shore, which provides an excellent milieu for the predator fish. In the main fishing season you can catch dozens of pikes daily, even in big size! Beside pikes there are plenty of perches and pike perches attracting the anglers. The vegetation is variable, it often reminds us rather to a lake than a sea bay. The fish can be seen here in large groups, their presence is quite uneven alongside the Swedish coast. Adventure Fishing is providing only those detinations which had been carefully tested by our team earlier.
The best places in Sweden for pike fishing are the lakes and the above mentioned archipelago. We can often catch bream and tench in the Swedish lakes, this is a really good complementary angling. In certain lakes there are enormous trouts, their weight often rich 8-10 kilograms. Fishing on a lake is little bit a challenge: you have to find the fish with the help of the right method. Trolling is very popular, and gives you a chance to catch really big pikes, though in some places – like in the archipelago – it is strictly forbidden.
Sweden has not only lakes and archipelago, but also plenty of rivers, mostly in the Southern part of the country. We strongly recommend you the famous Alsteran stream, which is one of the best places in Sweden to catch trouts. Here we can both use spinning or flyfishing.
Getting there
There are daily ferry departures from Gdynia to Karlskrona, form Swinoujscie to Ystad and from Rostock to Trelleborg. There plenty of low cost flights (Wizzair and Ryanair) to Stockholm Skavsta Airport and there and both traditional and low cost airlines operate flights to Gothenburg. In this case you have to rent a car at the airport. Please ask for an offer by us! In case of flying you must carefully pack lagguage and fishing tackles, because it is an extra cost on the low cost flights.
You can drive your own car as well, most of our camps can be reached with a few hours driving from the ferry stations. In this case you can take extra weight and tackle with you, plus you can share the fuel costs with your fellow travellers.
Fishing rules
Angling in the archipelago and on the five biggest lakes are free of charge (Vannern, Vattern, Malaren, Hjalmaren és Stor). If you want to fish in the lakes, you must buy a fishing permit, which are normally included in our packages. There is a size restriction for pikes almost everywhere. According to the Swedish law you can normally kill as much fish you need for you household. Most of our fishing camps introduced C&R fishing, which means that the pikes (and sometimes other species) have to be released. We always inform our guests about the rules of the chosen destination.
Best travel periods
Swedish pikes eat intensively during springtime starting from April-May, although most of the lakes are still very cold in this period. A good advantage of spring fishing that the pikes can be found fairly easily in the shallow waters and beside the reeds. In springtime we recommend spinning spoons, jerkbatis and wobblers. Flyfishing for pikes has become a popular method in the past years as well. Autumn can also be very successful for pike fishing; they can be found in deeper waters and they fight very aggressively, especially in October and November. This is the right time for trolling or spinning with deep running baits. Autumn period is also much better to catch perch. If like nature, there is another adventage autumn: you can pick mushroom in the Swedish forests. Of course it is necessary to show these mushroom for a professional before consumption.
As a conclusion we recommend the period from beginning of May to end of June and then the period from September to November. We can also be successful during summer, especially in case of deeper lakes.
One day they eat next day they don’t
There are several factors which can influence the activity of the fish, sometimes they eat intensively, the other day they simply disappear. This fact is known by the experienced anglers. In this case we have to continue searching them, trying new baits, until we have success. If we seat depressed in the bungalow, it does not help. Maybe you should take a little break, have a walk in the forest, you can collect mushroom, etc. In each camp there is a local assistance. They know the water very well, they can give you the best advise, where to find the fish, what kind of baits to use, etc. In some places there is a possibility to hire a professional guide, this is always recommended at the beginning, the price you pay will give you a good profit for the rest of the week.
More, but smaller, or less but bigger?
This is always a big dilemma for pike anglers. You have the chance to catch a pike over 1 meter any time, especially during springtime in shallow water. But if you want to catch only big pikes, you have to introduce a different tactic, using really big baits. But first of all, you have to be very patient because the big ones eat rarely and for only a short time. Good luck!
Catch and release
Adventure Fishing team has been always promoting C&R angling. We do this sport as a hobby, we prefer being in nature, fresh air and the adventure itself. Releasing fish means that you take care of the future, and make efforts to preserve these amazing water for your grandchildren. There are strict regulations in our camps, in some places you can kill one pike or pike perch per cottage, other places introduced completely no kill rules for pikes. We always inform you about the uptodate rules.
About the weather
Although Sweden is a country located in Northern Europe, its climate in not so cold as it is expected, especially in the southern part of the country, where most of our camps are located. Swedish summer is fairly sunny with occasional rainfalls. The days are really long, on the northern part of Sweden the sun remains above the horizont for 45 days. The temperature can be sometimes cold and windy during spring and autumn, warmer clothes are recommended. Waters are going to freeze in winter everywhere.
About the costs
Sweden is the cheapest country in Scandinavia, although is still a little more expensive than the Central-Eastern European countries. There are plenty of supermarkets where you can do the shopping, they are located in the outskirts or alongside the highways. If you want to drink alcohol, it is recommended to bring it with you in the car, because it is difficult and expensive to buy alcohol in Sweden.
